Mapping Our Past

At 10AM: Florida Gulf Coast University Archivist Victoria Jones and Special Collections has taken on the challenge of digitizing over 10,000 maps that highlight decades of ecological and social change in Southwest Florida. This presentation will explore their ongoing efforts to make the collection more accessible and relevant to today’s researchers, collaborations with environmental scientists and faculty at The Walter School and some of the interesting items that have surfaced during the project. Uncharted Territory will provide a behind-the-scenes look into how historic maps and modern technology can combine to put Southwest Florida cartography back on the map! Victoria Jones is the University Archivist for Florida Gulf Coast University. A native Floridian, Jones earned her Master’s Degree in History from the University of North Florida and a Master of Library and Information Science from University of Southern Mississippi. Prior to her current position at FGCU, she was the Archives and Special Collections Librarian at Mississippi University for Women. In addition, Jones teaches American History and Archival Studies courses as part of FGCU’s Department of Political Science, Public Administration, & History. At 11:30 AM: Charting the Land of Flowers: 500 Years of Florida Maps with Rodney Kite-Powell will present the earliest depiction of Florida on the 1511 Martyr Map to a 21st-century view of Florida from space. This presentation brings together maps from collections around the world, including the Touchton Map Library in the Tampa Bay History Center and Jacksonville Public Library’s Lewis Ansbacher Map Collection, and shows the dramatic changes that have occurred in the Sunshine State over the past 500 years. Rodney Kite-Powell is the Director of the Touchton Map Library at the Tampa Bay History Center. He received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Florida and a Master of Arts from the University of South Florida, both in U.S. History. He wrote and lectured on state and local history and is the author of three books including: History of Davis Islands: David P. Davis and the Story of a Landmark Tampa Neighborhood and Tampa Bay’s Waterfront: Its History and Development.
