Lady Windermere's Fan

The 4th Wall Players will be performing “Lady Windermere’s Fan”, a farcical but introspective look at English high society in the late 19th century, written by Oscar Wilde. For the fourth season of 4th Wall’s summer classic series; Josh Gibson is set to return to the director’s chair, with Stephen Taylor as his assistant. This will be 4th Wall’s second Wilde script, having previously done “The Importance of Being Earnest” in 2023 (also directed by Gibson). “I’ve really related to the heart of this script,” says Josh, “unlike Earnest, this show has more vulnerable moments with the characters. And though it also has it’s fast paced wit that Wilde was known for, the interpersonal relationships between the leads really drives the plot, and it’s what made me so excited to direct this one.” 4th Wall is thrilled to present this lesser known Wilde classic with both returning; Lizzie Schultz (The Importance of Being Earnest), Jy’Ierre Jones (The Silent Muse), Omar Jurdi (Tartuffe), Rebecca Brelage (An Evening with Alice), Kristen Paarlberg (Twisted), Nathaniel Taff (Beauty and the Beast), Isabel Moore (Wuthering Heights), Tyler Gibson (Grotesque of Notre Dame), and new actors; Adriana Menefee, Nelani Huntington, Amanda Horcher, Amanda Amos, Fred Margison and Josh Roberts. This production will be appropriate for all audiences and will be performed in historic Irvington at the Backlot Makerspace and Venue (5635 Bonna Ave, Indianapolis IN) - an up and coming venue that is located across the street from Strange Bird. Tickets are $15 and are available at the door, or you can pre-purchase on 4th Wall Players’ website https://www.4thwallplayers.org/tickets. Season tickets that include the remaining 3 shows for 2026 are available on their site as well. Lady Windermere's Fan, A Play About a Good Woman is a four-act comedy by Oscar Wilde, first performed in 1892 at the St James's Theatre in London. Gossip leads Lady Windermere to suspect that her husband is having an affair with another woman. When she confronts him, he denies it, but insists she invites the woman in question, Mrs Erlynne, to her birthday ball. When she refuses, he invites Mrs Erlynne, asking that his wife trust that what he’s doing is for the best. Angered by his supposed unfaithfulness, Lady Windermere decides to leave her husband for Lord Darlington, who has recently confessed his love for her. After reading a note meant for Lord Windermere, Mrs Erlynne follows Lady Windermere and attempts to persuade her to return to her husband. Having made a similar mistake in her past, Mrs Erlynne lets herself be discovered in a compromising position at Lord Darlington's to give Lady Windermere the opportunity to leave without being noticed. The next day, Lord Windermere admits that his wife was correct only to have her opinion of Mrs Erlynne completely change. Now the sides are flipped as Lord Windermere insists that Mrs Erlynne is a bad woman and that he only wanted to help her out of sympathy and Lady Windermere tries to convince him that people aren’t all bad or all good. The 4th Wall Players are celebrating their 15th season. More information about the performances can be found at 4thwallplayers.org or facebook.com/Players4thWall.
