Lei of Aloha - Oahu
The public is invited to join the Girl Scouts for a lei-making event on Saturday, May 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Windward Mall. Volunteers are asked to bring their own lei-making needles and flowers if they’d like to participate. Veterans are also warmly encouraged to attend in uniform and share their stories with volunteers.
Donations of loose flowers and 24-inch lei from schools, local businesses, and other organizations are needed to help ensure every veteran's headstone is honored this Memorial Day. Donations will be accepted throughout the event at Windward Mall’s Center Stage. Suggested flower donations include plumeria, bougainvillea, stephanotis and crown flower. Tropical flowers, such as torch ginger and heliconia, are also welcome. Flowers should be no longer than (maximum length of 24 inches).
The following morning, on Sunday, May 24, Girl Scout troops will place American flags and handcrafted handmade lei on veterans’ headstones to honor their service and sacrifice.
