The Davis Democracy Initiative at Punahou School invites you to two public events on the evenings of Wednesday, February 26th and Thursday, February 27th from 6:00-7:30 in the Luke Lecture Hall, Wo International Center.
Professor Diana Hess is the Karen A. Falk Distinguished Chair of Education at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She is a global expert on modeling difficult conversations among school-age children and developing classroom practices that can foster democratic engagement. She's the author of two books: Controversy in the Classroom: The Democratic Power of Discussion and The Political Classroom: Evidence and Ethics in Democratic Education (with Paula McAvoy). Professor Hess is a former high school social studies teacher and helps to coordinate the Discussion Project, which creates welcoming, engaging, and academically rigorous classroom environments in which students experience productive classroom discussions on important issues and topics. These are extraordinary times, and we can't imagine anyone better positioned to help us respond to this moment.
