Kimo the Waiter, a heartfelt comedy by celebrated playwright Lee Cataluna is coming to Kumu Kahua Theatre. On stage November 7 - December 8, 2024 under the direction of Jason Kanda, the production is part of the theatre’s 54th season exploring themes of identity and self-discovery within Hawai’i’s unique cultural landscape. Kaipo Dudoit plays the title role of Kimo—a waiter with dreams of becoming a professional actor in 1980s Hawai’i. Kimo finds himself in a time with few roles for people of color aside from local commercials that often reinforce stereotypes—sometimes even more than Hollywood’s depictions of Hawaiʻi. As he tries to break free from one-dimensional images of island characters, Kimo’s quest is funny, frustrating and totally relatable. Tickets are on sale now at www.kumukahua.org and the box office, with evening and matinee performances available.
