In addition to being a medium for artists’ self-expression, African American art has served many purposes – challenging systems, telling untold stories, and igniting cultural movements. Join University of Hartford visiting professor Christina Swaidan to deepen your understanding of how it has shaped and been shaped by the historical and social forces of its time. This mini-course will cover the eras folk art and the visual legacies of slavery/Emancipation, the rise of post-Emancipation artistic expression, and the culture-artistic revolution of the Harlem Renaissance.
