If you love local history (and the library, and architecture) join us for the second part of our Bosler’s Birthday Series!
The highlight of the architectural treasure that is The Bosler Memorial Library is the memorial window of the original library building. This stained glass masterpiece is dedicated to the memory of Lila, one of the daughters of J. Herman and Mary Bosler, the founders of the library. The story behind the window is more complicated and dramatic than is generally thought. The window’s significance, too, seems remote since we take it for granted as part of the old building. Jeff Wood, a former Board member, will tell the story of the closely-knit Bosler family, Lila’s own brief and tragic life, and how the family chose the window as a way for a town to remember her story.
Jeff Wood and his wife Betsy founded Whistlestop Bookshop 40 years ago. It still thrives in Bosler’s neighborhood. He is a Dickinson College graduate and has a Masters in American Studies from Penn State University. For 20 years he delivered The Cumberland County Historical Society’s Fall Lecture Series. He has served on the boards of Bosler, the Historical Society, and the Carlisle Theatre.
