The Pirates of Penzance: A Play with Music will surprise you with its comedic presentation of a Pirate King who has a soft spot in his heart for orphans, an honored Major General who lies to save his daughters, and a mistaken and smitten nursery maid named Ruth. The lives of these bold characters intersect as Frederick, Ruth's charge, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates led by the Pirate King. To Ruth’s shock and horror, Frederick instantly falls in love with Mabel, one of the Major General’s many innocent daughters. The tables turn when Frederick learns that since he was born on February 29th, he technically has a birthday only once each leap year - meaning that he must remain apprenticed to the pirates until his "twenty-first birthday" - and serve for another 63 years! Will his sense of duty bind him to Ruth and the pirates? Will Mabel agree to wait for him faithfully? The pirates attack! The police are summoned! The surprises continue! Until everyone lives happily ever after…

Pirates of Penzance was the fifth Gilbert and Sullivan collaboration. The opera was performed for over a century and remains popular today as one of the most frequently played Gilbert and Sullivan operas. Our play - The Pirates of Penzance: A Play with Music - has been lovingly adapted by Heather Neumann. Although there are many elements of music throughout, this is not an opera!!
