AVB Community Band Concert

You’re invited to a beautiful evening of music from around the world when the AVB Community Band performs “A World United by Love” on Monday, April 14, at 7 p.m. at the Ashwaubenon Performing Arts Center (PAC), 2391 S. Ridge Road in Ashwaubenon. Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission to the concert is at no charge, with donations gratefully accepted to help continue the all-volunteer band’s mission of “Music for a Lifetime.” The evening is sponsored by Willems Landscape Services of De Pere. We thank them for their longtime support of the AVB Community Band. The theme of the 43rd eight-concert season of the AVB Community Band is “A Season of Love.” This is the seventh in the season, which began in September. “The idea for this concert is to select ethnic music from different countries,” said Mike Ajango, director of the 75-member AVB Community Band. “We’ll be taking you on a marvelous trip around the world, all from your comfortable seat at the Ashwaubenon PAC,” he said. “The associate director is Paul Oleksy. The narrator for the concert is Bruce Deadman. The concert begins with the music of composer Robert Sheldon as he sets the tone for the evening with his lively Cajun-style “Travelin’ Music,” based on the folk song “The Arkansas Traveler.” We then travel to Saudi Arabia for “Arabia,” debuted only five years ago by composer Joseph Benjamin Earp. It's noted for its mysterious themes and is based on Atlantis, a lost city in Arabia. During “Italian Holiday,” arranged by Robert Longfield, you’ll enjoy a festive tour of Italy featuring some of the country’s most beloved songs and arias. The band moves on to Bulgaria for "Bucimis" with its traditional Bulgarian folk dance and song melodies, followed by the rousing “Fus. Bat. 23,” which was performed in 2006 in Italy by members of the then Allouez Village Band with our “sister” band in Steinegg, Italy. The first half closes out with the rousing “An Irish Party in Third Class,” arranged by Gaelic Storm and adapted by Richard Saucedo. After the intermission, we musically travel to Africa via “Furaha!” by Brian Beck, celebrating the Great Lakes of Africa via this joyous piece. Following that is a celebration of traditional Ashkenazi Jewish folk music in “Three Klezmer Miniatures.” The moving African-American spiritual “Deep River,” with its message of longing for freedom, is followed by the rousing “Go Down, Moses,” also an African-American spiritual, that describes the Hebrew exodus. The concert concludes with the driving Latin rhythms of “Malaguena” arranged by Sammy Nestico.
