Grand Rapids Choir of Men and Boys - Spring Concert

The choir concludes its 35th season with a sacred concert dedicated to Spring: the harbinger to God’s faithfulness and promise of new life. In this program, the choir will present several new anthems to its repertoire, opening with the lower voices of the choir accompanied by solo harp singing an anthem by Edward Higginbottom. It is a setting of Te Lucis Ante Terminum (Before the Ending of the Day) set to the music of Pablo Casal’s The Birds. Healey Willan’s Rise Up, My Love, My Fair One invites us into spring with all its sights and sounds while Grayston Ives' Faithful Shepherd, provides a gorgeous, tender re-imagining of Psalm 23. Accompanied by harp and flute, Mack Willberg’s arrangement of the Southern Harmony American hymn-tune His Voice as the Sound invites us to hear the voice of Christ speak through the beauty of nature. James Whitbourn has written a stunning new setting of Set Me as a Seal Upon Thine Heart about the commitment required by love, ultimately seen in Christ’s love for humankind and his whole creation. Also new to the choir’s library is Ola Gjeilo’s Ubi Caritas, where love is...there is God also found. Of course, the choir will also present a few of its chestnut favorites along the way including John Ireland’s Greater Love Hath No Man which the choir just performed this April when we combined our choir with the the Choir of St. John’s College, Cambridge during their USA tour. The program will take place once again at our Basilica of St. Adalbert home on Saturday, May 17 at 7:00 PM and again on Sunday, May 18 at 3:00 PM No tickets required, a free will offering will be taken. Note: Thank you once again for your understanding that due to the often quiet, reflective nature of our choir’s programming, infants and young children can create distractions for those attending.
