MAHAGONNY SONGSPIEL

Under the baton of Timothy Weiss, DCWS reunites with the Detroit Opera Resident Artists for a performance of Kurt Weill’s Mahagonny Songspiel and Maurice Ravel’s Deux mélodies hébraïques (“Two Hebrew Songs”). Please join us at 2:30 p.m. for A Hundred Years from Mahagonny, a pre-concert talk by U-M Clinical Professor of Music Caroline Helton. About A Hundred Years from Mahagonny With the Mahagonny Songspiel, Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht began their collaboration centering social commentary in their art. Professor Helton’s pre-concert talk will examine the musical and historical context of the original composition and explore the prescient themes that resonate from Weimar Germany to our present day in the U.S. This performance is funded in part by the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music, Inc., New York, NY.
