Shipwreck to Sipping Whiskey!

Join Cranbrook Institute of Science for the December installment of the Ignite Your Curiosity Speaker Series on Friday, December 19, featuring Chad Munger, Founder & CEO of Mammoth Distilling, and Dr. Eric Olsen, Associate Professor of Plant, Soil & Microbial Science at Michigan State University. In this speaker series, they’ll share the remarkable story of the 1878 James R. Bentley cargo schooner wreck in Lake Huron—where rye seeds laid preserved for nearly 150 years—and how these historic seeds were recovered, revived, and are now being used in whisky production! Ignite Your Curiosity highlights local scientists and STEAM professionals making an impact in the Metro Detroit community and beyond. The series is included with general museum admission and intentionally scheduled during the Institute’s $5 Fridays after 5:00pm, making science more accessible to everyone for just $5 per person. Chad and Eric’s talk will begin promptly at 7:30pm, with seating first come, first served. Come early to explore the Institute, enjoy the exhibits, and raise a glass (of knowledge!) to the science behind fine spirits. Quench your thirst for science—join us for an evening of discovery! ✨
