Highlands Ranch Genealogical Society March 2025 Program: Victorian Mourning Customs

Join us at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at The Highlands Ranch LDS Stake Center, 9800 Foothills Canyon Blvd #B, Highlands Ranch, CO 80129 for a presentation of “Victorian Mourning Customs - Lifting the Veil off Morbid Genealogical Treasures,” by genealogist, author, and librarian Debra Dudek. Take a glimpse into the customs and rituals of death in Victorian Britain and North America. Genealogists can thank the Victorians for the 'cult of mourning' which generated a fantastic assortment of keepsakes, mementos, and paperwork. Discover how these materials and the cultural attitudes toward grief can be researched with the help of modern tools and new resources. Debra M. Dudek is Head of Adult and Teen Services at the Fountaindale Public Library District in Bolingbrook, IL. She holds a postgraduate certificate in Genealogical, Paleographic & Heraldic Studies from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. Ms. Dudek is the Book Review Editor of the Illinois State Genealogical Society, an executive board member of the Illinois State Historical Society, website coordinator for the Chicago Chapter NSDAR, and is the author of the World War I Research Guide: Tracing American Military and Non-Combatant Ancestors. Arrive early at 6:30 p.m. for networking with fellow genealogists. You never know who might have an answer to your most perplexing research problem. Also, Family Search computers will be available starting at 6 p.m., for anyone wanting to use them. We invite you to continue the genealogical conversation after the meeting over libations at Old Chicago, 1489 Park Central Dr, Highlands Ranch, CO 80129. Winter is here, so if the weather looks dicey on the day of the meeting, please check the HRGS Website at https://hrgenealogy.wordpress.com for updates. Questions?
