Immerse yourself in the world of jazz with our new weekday salon series in partnership with the Aurora Fox Arts Center. Curated by CJRO Artistic Director Drew Zaremba, these one-hour long salons will feature some of the best musical storytellers in Colorado. The salons are designed to be accessible to our diverse community, offering a unique opportunity for students and adults alike to experience the music and story of jazz.
Jazz Salon Series: The Birth of Jazz: New Orleans in the late 19th & 20th Centuries
Discover the origins of Southern jazz in the African American communities of New Orleans and how it shaped the future of American jazz. This Salon will be an informal discussion and live performance with vocalist Tatiana LadyMay Mayfield and CJRO Artistic Director Drew Zaremba.
New Orleans jazz is characterized by its captivating rhythms, collective improvisation, and a blend of African, Caribbean, and European musical traditions. Instruments commonly used in the New Orleans jazz genre include the trumpet, clarinet, trombone, piano, and drums, creating a rich and dynamic sound. The genre played a crucial role in the development of jazz in North America, with legendary musicians like Louis Armstrong, Al Hirt, and Jelly Roll Morton emerging from the scene. The final Salon of the series is 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8. Jazz from the 20th to 21st Centuries Journey through the history of American jazz from the 1920s to today's music artists, offering a behind-the-scenes look at some of the greatest composers of the last hundred years.
Drew Zaremba’s leadership as Artistic Director of the Colorado Jazz Repertory Orchestra (CJRO) over the past four years has been pivotal in the orchestra's growth and evolution. His extensive contributions to the jazz world—ranging from composing and performing with leading orchestras and big bands to his educational endeavors—have uniquely shaped the CJRO’s artistic direction. One of Zaremba’s key missions has been to broaden the CJRO’s programming, while actively collaborating with local Colorado composers to bring fresh, innovative works to the orchestra’s repertoire. This new jazz salon is a shining example of Drew’s vision for the orchestra through innovative programs.
