Miró Quartet with Steven Banks, saxophone

Friends of Chamber Music is thrilled to welcome back the Miró Quartet to our stage, this time with composer and classical saxophonist, Steven Banks. Wednesday, May 14, 7:30 PM, Newman Center for the Performing Arts, 2344 E. Iliff Avenue, Denver. One of America’s most celebrated quartets, the ensemble will be joined by Banks for the second-ever performance of his new work, "Come What May," which received its world premiere last month with Arizona Friends of Chamber Music. The evening will also include Banks’s arrangement of two songs by Caroline Shaw, "Other Song," and "And So," as well as his arrangement of Golijov’s "Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind," all commissioned by Friends of Chamber Music Denver. “Come What May has flashes of somber melancholy interspersed with achingly beautiful melodies introduced by the saxophone and fleshed out by the strings. ...Banks wrote gorgeous music for the strings, which the Miró accentuated with pristine playing. But it was the sax that shined throughout.” (Cathalena Burch, Arizona Daily Star) About the Miró Quartet: For over twenty-five years the Quartet has performed throughout the world on the most prestigious concert stages, earning accolades from critics and audiences alike. Based in Austin, TX, and thriving on the area’s storied music scene, the Miró takes pride in finding new ways to communicate with audiences of all backgrounds while cultivating the longstanding tradition of chamber music. The Miró Quartet was awarded first prize at several national and international competitions including the Banff International String Quartet Competition and the Naumburg Chamber Music Competition. In 2005, the Quartet became the first ensemble ever to be awarded the coveted Avery Fisher Career Grant. About Steven Banks: As a performer and composer, saxophonist Steven Banks is striving to bring his instrument to the heart of the classical music world. He is driven to program and write music that directly addresses aspects of the human experience and is an active and intentional supporter of diverse voices in the future of concert music. Banks was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2022. Banks serves as Saxophone and Chamber Music Faculty and Artist-in-Residence at the Cleveland Institute of Music. “...one senses that Banks has the potential to be one of the transformational musicians of the twenty-first century.” –Seen and Heard International
