Friends of Chamber Music presents the Danish String Quartet
The ensemble will be featured on FCM’s Chamber Series, performing at 7:30 PM in Gates Hall, Newman Center for the Performing Arts, 2344 E. Iliff Avenue. Musical America’s 2020 Ensemble of the Year, the quartet will perform classical works by Mozart, Shostakovich, and Stravinsky, as well as original compositions and arrangements by the quartet. About the Quartet: The Danish String Quartet recently celebrated their 20th Anniversary in 2024, having formed when violinists Frederik Øland and Rune Tonsgaard Sørenson and violist Asbjørn Nørgaard were teenagers under the mentorship of Tim Frederiksen of Copenhagen’s Royal Danish Academy of Music. In 2008, the three Danes were joined by Norwegian cellist Fredrik Schøyen Sjölin.
The GRAMMY-nominated Danish String Quartet has become one of today’s most in-demand classical quartets. The quartet has been the recipient of many awards and appointments, including Musical America’s 2020 Ensemble of the Year; the Borletti-Buitoni Trust; BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist; and a coveted spot in the Bowers Program (formerly CMS Two). In 2011, the Quartet was awarded the Carl Nielsen Prize, the highest cultural honor in Denmark. On October 8, the Danish String Quartet was awarded the Léonie Sonning Music Prize. The quartet is the first ensemble to ever win the accolade, which is usually awarded to individual artists.
