Join us for an astronomical hour of fun and education, including eclipse mythology, the science behind eclipses, and photos from speaker Raquel Iverson‘s personal eclipse-chasing adventures. Learn the difference between a lunar and a solar eclipse. Marvel at the serendipity of planetary geometry that creates solar eclipses on Earth. Reflect on the experience of our ancestors when viewing this celestial phenomenon for the first time. Be inspired to plan your own eclipse-viewing trip!
About Raquel Iverson: After earning degrees in Biology, Biochemistry, and Chemical Engineering, Raquel was employed in multiple roles at Genentech in South San Francisco, until her retirement last year after 30 years there. She is co-VP of Programing for the AAUW Pacifica Branch, and volunteers with the Pacifica Historical Society, the Sanchez Adobe, and the Friends of San Pedro Valley Park. Although not an astronomy expert, she is passionate about science and nature, and is an amateur umbraphile (eclipse hobbyist), having observed 3 total solar eclipses, and several partial and annular eclipses. She is thrilled to share her eclipse experiences with the AAUW Pacifica Branch (and friends!).
Open and free to the public.
Dessert, coffee and tea served.
