HADESTOWN (Teen Edition)**
A musical of an age-old Greek myth… Reimagined in the foreground of the bustling, vibrant world of depression-era New Orleans…
Once upon a time, there was a railroad line… It was a road to hell, and it was hard times…And the wind blows, piercing the factory funnels… Down below, chained workers are hacking away with their rusted pickaxes- in tunnels, just barely illuminated by the harsh lights from their concrete helmets. Their palms are smeared with grime, and their faces are painted with coal ash… Working their lives away as the eyes of Hades peers above them, watching their every move… Way up above, leather soles and heels patter against the rough, wooden floorboards, and wine glasses clink throughout the speakeasy. The smooth yet sharp rhythms of saxophones, cellos, and harsh drums reverberate... Outside, the wraithlike fates lurk about, taunting a starving, young girl named Eurydice… With just a match and a footstep into the pitch-black shadows, she meets a gifted poet known as Orpheus- a demigod who is determined to finish his song… Deeply inspired by their connected hearts, their love blossoms like spring while Persephone and Hades’ love fades… However, now that the chips are down, desperate times lure Eurydice towards Hades- offering her a promise of security… She makes her descent down below, separating her from her lover…
Orpheus must prove his faith and love to save Eurydice from her eternal fate; traversing the road to hell with the guidance of Hermes… Will his journey be successful? Will the two star-crossed lovers find their happily ever after? Will their undying love decipher the fate of Eurydice? Will he be able to outwit Hades and his plan for Hadestown?
Join us as we travel below… As students and artists, we take a leap of faith to tell this story of love and fate, with the eyes of Hades and Persephone watching us all.
