MEANWHILE A Docu-Poem in Six Verses About Artists Breathing Through Chaos Film at Gateway Film Center WATCH TRAILER HERE www.MeanwhileFilm.com Aubin Pictures is proud to present MEANWHILE, a cinematic docu-poem in six verses about artists breathing through chaos, on May 3 and May 4 at Gateway Film Center. Told across six dynamic movements, the film centers breath as a symbol of resistance and resilience—blending music, dance, poetry, and imagery to capture the disorientation, grief, and creative fire of 2020 and beyond. In collaboration with Jacqueline Woodson (text), Meshell Ndegeocello (soundscape), Erika Dilday (support), M. Trevino (structure), and Catherine Gund (direction), MEANWHILE weaves artistic expression with historical and observational footage into a rare meditation on identity, race, and resistance as they shape our shared breath. Rather than showing finished works, MEANWHILE honors process: dancers in rehearsal, artists mid-sketch, music still unfolding. The film is a love letter to the present moment—an invitation to sit inside the uncertainty of creation and feel the power of staying alive and connected through art. MEANWHILE offers a rare cinematic meditation on identity, race, resistance, and transformation. Inspired by the uprising after George Floyd’s murder and shaped by the pandemic’s isolating force, MEANWHILE resists trauma spectacle and instead foregrounds a collective breath—of artists, thinkers, and makers—pushing back against the systems that seek to confine and define us. As poet Ivy Young says, “Breathe through the panic and get to the next step.” MEANWHILE is that next step.
