LEARN MORE ABOUT THE WORKS:
ENTANGLED
Entangled, choreographed and directed by Sarah Hixon, explores three distinct narratives--one on an intimate scale, one on a global scale, and one on a galactic scale. The colossal transformation of galaxies colliding, the crisis of arbitrary global borders, and the personal drama of sharing spaces begin to weave and overlap. Movements and motifs from each story become jumbled and eventually delve into chaos. The juxtaposition of these stories reveal surprising connections between them, as well as moments of pathos, kindness, and wonder. Finally, dancers and narrative are unified by the understanding that humanity has the power to transform its place in the universe, and it is our collective responsibility to “deal more kindly with one another” even as our potential self-destruction looms.
Inspired by the impending collision of our galaxy with our nearest neighboring galaxy, Andromeda, Entangled uses science to reveal our complex relationship with transformation. Commissioned writings by scientist Dr. Gregory Mack and playwrights Mackenzie Worrall and Chris Leyva ultimately reveal the similarity of transformation regardless of scale. The commissioned sound score by Jacob Reed includes selections from the Voyager Golden Record, humanity's calling card to the universe. This work is full of heartache for "man’s inhumanity to man" and disregard for the planet. Yet the work ends with the hope that, in recognizing our insignificance, we remember to look beyond ourselves. Only this will save humanity and our existence on this planet.
BIORHYTHMIC POLYCHROME
A newly commissioned work by long-time company member and rehearsal director Alicia Hann. Biorhythmic Polychrome is an exploration of spectrum that transforms into a kaleidoscope of moving bodies. Featuring 7 dancers, the work discovers the interplay between individuality and group connection, accompanied by the live sounds of marimba and flute--performed live by Erin Helgeson Torres and Ben Shaheen. Hann is interested in the intersection of dance as a physical, intellectual, spiritual, and emotional pursuit. In this work she invites the dancers in on the creative process. Dancers explore and analyze Hann's prescribed movement, as well as generating movement collaboratively with her, diving deeper into collaboration and how it resonates with all the dancers' individual lived experiences. Hann has performed with Hixon Dance for 6 seasons and holds the Victoria Alesi Company Position. She is the first choreographer other than the artistic director to be commissioned to create work for the company.
