The South Carolina State Library will be hosting a “Speaker at the Center” event commemorating the release of Mayor Vincent Sheheen's new book, "The Concise Guide to South Carolina State Government," published by the University of South Carolina Press.
The event will be held on Wednesday, May 27th, 2026, 3:30pm to 5:00pm at the South Carolina State Library, 1500 Senate Street, Columbia, SC, 29201.
The event encompasses a talk by Mayor Sheheen explaining the origins, purpose, and scope of the book. The event is free and open to the public; registration is required at https://statelibrary.sc.libcal.com/event/15976893?hs=a. Copies of the book will be available for purchase on site.
Vincent Sheheen is the Mayor of Camden, SC; an attorney; and a former state senator. He was a member of the South Carolina State Senate from 2004-2020, representing the 27th District. He was also a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 2001-2004. He is the co-host of the popular SC politics podcast Bourbon in the Backroom, and has published numerous essays, articles, and the book, The Right Way: Getting the Palmetto State Back on Track.
“No current book explains South Carolina state government, its structure, and its history,” Sheheen says. This is the first, essential, nonpartisan reading experience to document the body’s founding, evolution over time, and configuration in its modern state, providing a comprehensive outlook on South Carolina state government operation from its genesis to the current day.
The functions of the three branches of state government, state agencies, as well as local governments are all examined with an insight that only someone who has walked the corridors of the State House in Columbia can provide.
