Confronting Colonial Frameworks: Cameroonian Art in a Carolina Context

As part of the programming for the Layers of Legacy exhibition, Dr. Abbe Schriber will present a contemporary perspective on the Cameroonian art in McKissick Museum's collection as it relates to South Carolina Black arts. She will discuss artists who have an interest in reclaiming African art as part of their ancestral and genealogical heritage. She will also provide context to the difficulties of provenance in African art, problematic entering of collections via missionary/military acquisition, from the perspective of museums as Western colonial inventions. Dr. Schriber is assistant professor of Art History and African American Studies at the University of South Carolina, Columbia.
