Playwright Peter Filichia questions, “Was Shylock really the villain in The Merchant of Venice? A new contemporary language version of Shakespeare’s “problem play” says no. Were the Christians actually Christian? No again.” Join the Interplay Script Club, a project of Interplay Jewish Theatre, and the Maltz Museum for a group discussion of the stage play Shylock v Antonio. Moderated by Faye Sholiton, founder of Jewish Interplay Theater.
Peter Filichia’s playwriting credits include God Shows Up (off-Broadway, 2019); Restore Me, Please (winner of the 2021 Pirandello Prize); and his solo show A Personal History of the American Theatre, which he has performed around the country. A long-time theatre critic for the Newark Star Ledger, he is also a prolific magazine and online columnist, and author of eight books on theatre.
Participants may read the script prior to attending. If you cannot find a copy of the script, please contact Marianne Lax - [email protected] or 216-593-0583 to arrange pickup at the museum – if you are signing up with a friend, you may consider sharing a script.
