Cherubini Requiem and Haydn Te Deum concert by Master Singers Chorale of Northeast Ohio

A program of music from a time of wars and rumors of wars. Conducted by MSC Artistic Director Marc Weagraff, Luigi Cherubini's Requiem in C Minor moves from funereal solemnity to fiery protest. It derives from a period when people lost their faith in God and kings, in the French Revolution's Reign of Terror. In the aftermath of the ensuing tragedy, Cherubini composed this Requiem as a memorial for the last Bourbon monarch, Louis XVI, who died at the hands of his own subjects. By the time of this 1816 work, all Europe had been convulsed in the Napoleonic Wars. This Requiem begins with a quiet, foreboding sense of the grave's eternal rest, but soon veers to a furious Dies Irae, with horns announcing the Day of Vengeance. As Mozart in 1791 Vienna, Cherubini next added an outcry of weeping, Lacrymosa. But having witnessed what happened in France, Cherubini took the Lacrymosa lament beyond sorrow into outrage. The final Agnus Dei, addresses the blood sacrifice of the "Lamb of God" in a crescendo of grief. At this work's first performance, the result of Napoleon's defeat was unfolding, and the world looked back upon the carnage of an era. This performance, which also includes Haydn's Te Deum in C Major, is presented with offerings accepted, but no admission fee, thanks in part to support from the Akron Community Foundation and the Ohio Arts Council.
