In our 40th Season, the CJO will be celebrating by sharing some of the many amazing internationally recognized talents that have been nurtured by the CJO through growing and maturing its own performers and through its ever impactful Educational Outreach.
From being the youngest to receive a union card (age 10!) in Boston to her time as Arsenio Hall and then Quincy Jones TV show's drummer and then touring in her 20's with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock to the incredible career that followed, Terri Lyne Carrington has been a singular, incredible force for music and for change. Terri Lyne was the FIRST woman to win a Grammy in the category of Instrumental Jazz Album. Since then, she was won three other Grammy's and toured/recorded with Al Jarreau, Stan Getz, Woody Shaw, Clark Terry, Diana Krall, Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, James Moody, Yellowjackets, Esperanza Spalding, Kris Davis, Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, and Nancy Wilson.
Terri Lyne has been recognized with honorary doctorates and the Doris Duke Foundation for her contributions to music, inclusivity, trans and bi jazz musicians. She currently serves as the Founder and Artistic Director of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender and advocates for musicians seeking to study jazz with racial justice and gender justice as guiding principles.
This evening's concert will feature a number of world premieres of Terri's original compositions reconfigured for the eighteen piece CJO. These arrangements will be created by Artistic Director Paul Ferguson and by other members of the CJO.
