Maimonides' Holistic Health: Ancient Wisdom/Modern Nutrition With Dafna Ben-Yosef, PhD


This lecture explores the medieval Jewish philosopher and physician, Maimonides, and his holistic approach to health and nutrition, highlighting its relevance to modern wellness practices, particularly for aging individuals. Participants will examine his recommendations for diet, exercise, and emotional well-being, drawing parallels with contemporary health guidelines for nutrition, heart health, and longevity. The session will cover how his teachings, such as focusing on plant-based foods and mindful eating, align with best practices for aging gracefully and maintaining overall well-being. Dafna Ben Yosef is the Jewish Lifelong Learning Director at Siegal Lifelong Learning, CWRU. Dafna earned her Master of Arts degree in Bioethics from The Ohio State University in Columbus and a Ph.D. in medical sciences from the Technion Institute of Technology in Israel. She also earned her bachelor’s degree and Master of Science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She is a part-time faculty member in the John Carroll University Department of Theology in University Heights, teaching Healthcare Ethics and Social Justice course, and was recently appointed as an adjunct faculty at the CWRU School of Medicine, in the Department of Bioethics.
