Free Sherlock Holmes Film Festival

The Tankerville Club of Cincinnati, a local association of Sherlock Holmes devotees, will present a free Sherlock Holmes film festival on Saturday, October 12, at the historic Parkland Theatre, 6550 Parkland Ave., Sayler Park. The films to be shown from 3:30-6:30 p.m. include A Study in Terror (Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper, starring John Neville, 1965), and two seldom seen TV shows (Christopher Plumber in “Silver Blaze,” 1977) and Douglas Wilmer in “The Beryl Coronet,” 1965), plus a classic Daffy Duck and Porky Pig cartoon (“Deduce, You Say,” 1956). The theater’s pub will open at 2 p.m. for anyone who wishes to have drinks and conversation before the films. The Parkland Theatre was built in 1881 as a vaudeville theater, converted to silent movies in the 1920s, then to talkies not long after. The film festival, including one free soft drink and one free bag of popcorn per person, is supported by the R. Joel Senter Sr. Fund of the Tankerville Club, which was established to honor a long-time member. The 48-year-old Tankerville Club meets quarterly (March, June, September, December) for a dinner meeting at which we raise toasts, take a quiz, discuss a designated story, and occasionally hear a guest speaker. Although the club is based in Cincinnati, members from Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis attend regularly.
