Set in 1926, when radium was a “miracle cure” and luminous watches were the latest craze, the play is inspired by the true story of the dial painters who began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court against the formidable U.S. Radium Corporation, whose president cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could be killing his employees. The play is a fast-moving, highly theatrical ensemble piece that fiercely examines the commercialization of science, corporate exploitation, and the cost of justice.
