The congregation of Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur will join a community event in East Walnut Hills to honor its martyred sister, Dorothy Stang, SNDdeN.
The Harriet Beecher Stowe House is hosting Harriet’s Birthday Party on Sunday, June 8, from 12-4 p.m. This free, annual event for the whole community invites the public to celebrate the influential author of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” at the home where she resided in Cincinnati in the 1830s. The event will include free house tours, treats, games and entertainment, including a poetry slam.
The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur will showcase the life and legacy of Stang, who was 73 years old when her murder was contracted to silence her opposition to Amazon deforestation and the brutal treatment of subsistence farmers in Brazil. Born in Dayton, OH, she was assassinated in 2005 after having ministered in Brazil for almost 40 years.
“We are excited to introduce Sister Dorothy to people who may have never heard of her,” says Teresa Phillips, director of peace, justice and care of creation for Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. “She lived a remarkable life dedicated to improving lives and caring for the Amazon rainforest. Her birthday is June 7, so Harriet’s Birthday Party at the Harriet Beecher Stowe House is a perfect place to celebrate Sister Dot, too.”
All are welcome to attend the event and learn more about Stang. The information booth will include games, giveaways, and activities for children. It will be hosted by Sister Judith Clemens, a personal friend of Stang’s, and Phillips.
