Gallery Talk Plus: Bicycles and Freedom
Join us for a thought-provoking conversation on bicycles as tools for empowerment and freedom, alongside demonstrations to empower you on your next bike adventure. Enjoy a gallery talk in the Cycle Thru! The Art of The Bike exhibition from Madelyn Detloff, Professor of English, Global and Intercultural Studies at Miami University, focusing on the intersections of bicycling and women’s history. Then, watch a basic bike repair demonstration from Kat Ruegger of MoBo Bicycle Cooperative or map your next ride with a consultation from Tri-State Trails.
About the Presenters:
Madelyn Detloff has taught at Miami University for more than 22 years, focusing on feminist and queer theory, LGBTQ+ studies, modernist literature and culture, and crip theory. She is currently serving as the General Editor for Oxford University Press's Gender Justice Intersections Project.
MoBo is a volunteer-run bicycle cooperative. They are a community of people who come together to learn from each other, promote bicycling in our city, and build friendships. They maintain a fully equipped shop where members can learn to work on their own bicycles with the assistance of experienced volunteers through their core program, Open Shop. They host workshops, social events, and advocate for bicycling in Cincinnati.
Tri-State Trails’ mission is to connect people and places with a regional trail and bikeway network that enhances vibrancy and equity in the community. Tri-State Trails was organized in 2012 when Green Umbrella, Greater Cincinnati’s climate collaborative, convened partners from around the area to craft a connected vision for a fragmented regional trail network. Those initial discussions revealed how much interest there is to link communities with trails and bikeways. With support from Interact for Health, they prepared a nine-county Regional Trails Plan in 2014 and hired their first full-time team member in 2015. Since then, Tri-State Trails has grown to become the leading advocacy organization for active transportation issues in Greater Cincinnati.
