Monday Enrichment - Contemporary Japanese Art

The latest exhibition is Radical Clay, focusing on women ceramic artists from Japan, now touring the country. Dr. Katz will speak about the display and acquisitions made during her time at the museum to present tradition-based as well as avant-garde contemporary art from Japan. Janice Katz is the Roger L Weston curator of Japanese art at the Art Institute of Chicago. She received her PhD from Princeton University. She has been with the museum for over 20 years where she curates quarterly exhibitions of Japanese prints. Her other research focuses on paintings from the Edo period (1615-1858) and the history of art collecting in Japan. Her special exhibitions and publications include Japanese painting in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (2003); Beyond Golden Clouds: Japanese Screens from the Art Institute of Chicago and the St Louis Art Museum (2009); Painting the Floating World: Ukiyo-e Masterpieces from the Westen Collection (2018) and Radical Clay: Contemporary Women Artists from Japan (2023).
