The Curio's Tastemaker Talk & Reception: How Sneaker Culture Revolutionized Modern Fashion
The Curio’s Maggie Gillette will moderate a panel with Dave Jeff, streetwear pioneer and the founder of the first Black-owned sneaker boutique in Chicago and the brand PHLI, as well as Yohance LaCour, founder of his own namesake luxury sneaker brand and a 2024 Pulitzer Prize winner. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A and post-reception in Selva Lounge hosted by Mmmm...enjoy wines.
The panel will discuss how gym shoes went from a closet basic to a style essential with the rise of sneakers as a status symbol and its relation to the elevation of streetwear. Additionally, we'll talk about how Chicago has shaped global sneaker culture, from our sports teams to our street style, and what will come next for this stylish shoe.
The event is hosted by The Curio in partnership with The Emily Hotel and is part of its quarterly Tastemaker Talk Series which have featured Chicago-based fashion players including Janet Mandell, Sheila Rashid, Helen Berkun, Corey Williams, Azeeza Khan, Amy Anderson and others.
