Music becomes a lifelong bond in a program celebrating friendship, global traditions, and the joy of making music together.
In Good Company, the second subscription series concert of the 2025/26 Season, opens with Reena Esmail’s Tuttarana — its title combining the Italian word tutti and the Hindustani musical form tarana — a thrilling fusion of Eastern-inspired rhythms and athletic ensemble interplay.
John Mackey's serene folksong, Sheltering Sky offers a moment of contemplative serenity, its gently unfolding melodies inviting listeners into a reflective soundscape. From this quiet introspection, the program moves into Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations, where intimacy gives way to a kaleidoscope of vivid musical portraits. Each variation celebrates the composer’s closest friends, with the famed “Nimrod” standing out as a particularly moving tribute, linking personal reflection to shared human connection.
Our program featuring music by women composers continues with international flair with Chen Yi’s spirited, Spring Festival. Defined by its vibrant use of Beijing Opera gongs and cymbals, it captures the exuberant spirit of traditional Chinese New Year festivities.
Christina Huss’ moving and ethereal ballad When an Angel Gets its Wings is designed to take listeners on a reflective journey of faith and hope. The program closes with Michele Fernández’s La Fiera Asturiana. This fiery Spanish march, infused with flamenco flair, honors the composer’s grandmother, a tenacious flamenco artist from Asturias, Spain.
Talented middle school musicians from across Chicagoland, nominated by their teachers, join the Band for its annual "Lifetime of Music" performance. This celebrated event is at the core of the organization's mission: to foster a lifelong passion for music by encouraging and inspiring young musicians. The concert demonstrates that musical opportunities exist well beyond formal education, whether one pursues music as a career. Northshore Concert Band is a testament to this, featuring members who have played for less than a year alongside some who have been performing for over fifty years. Despite differences in age, profession, and lifestyle, all members share a common bond: a love for making and sharing music together.
