Relationships Matter Panel Discussion

Children experiencing trauma are at risk of “toxic” stress which keeps a child’s brain stuck in “fight” or “flight”. This can prevent them from learning, building healthy relationships, or developing coping skills. When left unaddressed it can have lifelong negative impacts including chronic diseases, depression, and other mental illnesses. The great news is that trauma is not destiny. The brain has the ability to learn, grow, and change. While therapy and other services are essential, research shows that the presence of a stable, caring adult in a child’s life is the key to building resilience. A relationship that allows a child to feel safe and cared for is a foundation on which all other elements of well-being can develop.
