Free Panel Discussion | The Power of Purpose: How Goal Setting Transforms Futures

Goal setting is a powerful tool for youth development. By learning how to set and work toward goals, young people build critical skills such as planning, time management, problem-solving, and perseverance. Equally important, goal setting fosters agency — giving young people a sense of control over their choices and future. Research shows that when children feel this sense of agency, they are more likely to develop self-efficacy, make sound decisions, and avoid risky behaviors. For children growing up in communities impacted by gun violence and poverty, strong goal-setting skills can be life-changing. Goals are just as important for parents and caregivers, who must navigate a wide range of challenges for themselves and their families. The discussion will be moderated by Taal Hasak-Lowy, Executive Director of Friends of the Children-Chicago. She will be joined by panelists Dr. Wendy Borlabi, Performance Psychology Consultant, and George Wu, Professor of Behavioral Science at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business who will share insights about how goal setting transforms lives.
