The Parish Choir, orchestra, and soloists will sing new settings of the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis by Grace Cantor Michael D. Costello, Bach’s cantata #91 for Christmas, “All Praise be to you, Jesus Christ,” and other music for the season. This cantata, inspired by Martin Luther’s hymn for Christmas morning, was written for Christmas Day in 1724 and celebrates the joyful news of Christ’s birth. Scored for choir, soloists, horns, oboes, timpani, and strings, it proclaims that Christ has come to bring the treasures of heaven. The beauty and power of this cantata were so cherished that Bach performed it four more times during his years as Thomaskantor in Leipzig. The 5-8 Grade Choir of Grace School will also sing music for the season, including some selections from their upcoming Christmas Eve services. Admission is free, although a free-will offering will be received.
