Reimagining Cabaret: The Genres Explored
Reimagining Cabaret: The Genres Explored marks the fourth powerful installment in the acclaimed Reimagining Cabaret series, created, produced, and directed by Lynn Colbert-Jones and presented by Black Voices in Cabaret (BVIC). This dynamic production will take place on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at 7:30 PM at Freedom Hall in Park Forest, Illinois.
Featuring an extraordinary cast of 18 singers and a stellar four-piece live band, The Genres Explored is a genre-spanning musical celebration of Black vocal artistry. With a setlist that moves fluidly across jazz, gospel, soul, blues, Broadway, R&B, funk, and contemporary music, the show highlights the emotional range, versatility, and storytelling power of Black performers in cabaret.
As with every installment of this series, the mission is clear: to elevate and amplify Black cabaret artists, provide essential platforms for performance and recognition, and redefine what cabaret can be in today’s diverse artistic landscape. Reimagining Cabaret embraces tradition while boldly expanding it—placing the spotlight squarely on the rich heritage and modern innovation of Black musicians and vocalists.
This fourth production follows three successful, high-impact shows:
• Reimagining Cabaret: Journey Through the Genres at the University of Chicago Logan Center for the Arts (178 in attendance)
• Reimagining Cabaret: Jazz, Rhythm & Blues at Epiphany Center for the Arts (sold-out performance)
• Reimagining Cabaret: The Journey Continues at the Logan Center (214 in attendance)
