The Mountaintop at the Beverly Arts Center

Inspired by MLK’s famous speech, “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop,” Katori Hall’s 2009 drama is set in Dr. King’s motel room the night before he is assassinated. He forms a friendship with his mysterious hotel maid, Camae, who helps him come to terms with the end of his life and the continuation of his legacy. Katori Hall received the Olivier Award for Best New Play for The Mountaintop in 2009, making her the first black woman to win the award. After its initial productions in London, the play premiered on Broadway in 2011. Since then, it has been produced at theatres around the world, most notably making its Chicago premiere at The Court Theatre in 2013
