Based on the Academy Award-winning film and adapted for the stage, Shakespeare in Love (based on the screenplay by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard) follows a young William Shakespeare as he struggles with writer’s block while attempting to write his next play. His creative spark is reignited when he meets Viola de Lesseps, a bold and intelligent young noblewoman who secretly longs to perform onstage despite laws forbidding women from acting in Elizabethan England. What follows is a whirlwind of mistaken identities, forbidden romance, backstage mishaps, and theatrical ambition as life and art begin to mirror one another. Aurora Players brings the world of 1593 London to life with a large and skillful ensemble cast portraying actors, nobles, theatre managers, and historical figures. The play’s “play-within-a-play” structure allows audiences to experience both the unfolding romance and the chaotic energy of creating theatre from the ground up. Audiences can expect more than 60 painstakingly handcrafted period costumes inspired by Elizabethan fashion, a jaw-dropping set that fills the stage with the energy of Renaissance London, and live music woven throughout. Total running time, including one 15-minute intermission, is approximately 2.5 hours. Suitable for ages 12 and up.
