Wilton Land Trust Hosts Birds & Binoculars: A Fall Birding Expedition

The birding expedition is led by our expert birder, environmentalist, gardener, and Wilton resident Joe Bear. Our fall migration bird walk will explore Wilton Land Trust’s Schenck's Island river walk. Together, we will explore this birding hot spot that offers diverse habitats, including open fields, woodlands, edges, and swamps. Birds & Binoculars: Fall 2024: Saturday, Sept. 28— 8:00 am (Drizzle or Shine) rain date - Sunday, Sept. 29 Schenck's Island: end of Old Ridgefield Rd in Wilton (202 Old Ridgefield Road). Rain or shine, Joe will lead us on a leisurely 2-hour walk, pointing out various bird species, defining calls, explaining behaviors, and answering your questions. Whether you are a seasoned birder or new to birdwatching, come join us for an exciting adventure to witness the beauty of migrating birds in Wilton. Grab your binoculars, water bottles, supportive shoes, tick and bug repellant, and cameras, and join us for a morning of adventure, exercise, fresh air, and learning. Please leave your furry friends at home so we don't scare off any wildlife we hope to see. Participants have the chance to see and hear a diverse assortment of Neotropic migrants making a stopover at Schenck's on their journey south to wintering grounds as far as the Pampas Grasslands of South America; these include a variety of warbler, flycatcher, vireo, and sparrow species, Baltimore Oriole, Scarlet Tanager, and raptors including Broad-winged Hawks- possibly in the 1,000's. Joe Bear has been birding for over 30 years, leading domestic and international trips for CT Audubon and other nature-based organizations. Joe enjoys sharing his passion and enthusiasm for birds, believing that, experienced or novice, there's always something new to learn every time we pick up our bins. Joe currently resides in Wilton with his wife and two kids. The Wilton Land Trust is a community-focused nonprofit organization that conserves land, protects biodiversity, enhances ecosystems, and builds community.
