Powerful Printmaking with Nitza Tufiño
Create an original print inspired by the prolific printmaker José Guadalupe Posada (1852–1913), whose cartoons and broadsides criticized Mexican politics and society before and during the Revolution. Under the guidance of pioneering artist activist Nitza Tufiño, learn the technique of linoleum block printing to achieve the expressive mark-making that renders this art form a powerful means of visual communication.
No printmaking experience required. Recommended for ages 15+. The workshop is in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and will be conducted in English and Spanish.
About Nitza Tufiño
Of Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage, Nitza Tufiño is Director of the Rafael Tufiño Printmaking Workshop, and was a founder in 1969 of Taller Boricua, the Puerto-Rican print workshop .A tool to make art accessible to the people and heal cultural wounds, it continues its educational mission in service of social change and cultural heritage, supporting the development of “Nuyorican” artists’ personal style within a contemporary context. In 1973, she created her first public mural for the façade of El Museo del Barrio, of which she is also a founder. Committed to public art, Tufiño also belongs to “El Consejo Grafico,” a national coalition of Latino printmaking workshops and individual printmakers.
