The Best of the FCCC -Broadway Concert
To celebrate Fairfield County Children’s Choir 30th Anniversary on February 8 at The Klein Memorial, we have changed the usual format of our Broadway concert to showcase “The Best of FCCC Broadway.” In the place of songs from two, three or four medleys, each conductor has chosen a selection of random favorites from thirteen different productions, with two songs each from Fiddler on the Roof and Wicked. These songs stand out to us as classics.
Musical theater, one of the most popular forms of entertainment on the stage or screen, evolved from a marriage of operetta and the British, European and American music hall acts of the early days of the 1900’s. It came into its golden age on Broadway in the mid-20th century, with composers such as Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, Leonard Bernstein, Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe creating many memorable masterpieces. These productions are a treasure trove of irresistible songs loved and embraced by the public. In addition, Broadway show tunes are an important part of the cultural heritage of America.
This performance includes five songs from two of our favorite composers, four from Stephen Schwartz and one from Charles Strouse. The FCCC was privileged to work with Mr. Schwartz and Mr. Strouse in the fall of 1997 as composers-in-residence at the Connecticut Grand Opera on their production of An Operatic Tribute to Broadway.
The concert features nearly 300 of the “Best” young singers in Fairfield County. We know you will enjoy listening to them navigate this wonderful collection of American culture!
