A Massachusetts native, Deborah Sampson is the only woman known to have disguised herself as a man and serve as a soldier in the Continental Army without getting caught! In honor of July 4th and the 250th-anniversary-year of the “shot heard ‘round the world” the Woburn Public Library will host a visit from Deborah on July 8. Come hear stories straight from this local heroine! Learn about close calls, mountainous obstacles, and head-scratching conundrums this heroine faced as a poor farm girl, who, without support from family or friends, risked humiliation and imprisonment to help free the colonies from English rule. Gain a behind-the-scenes look at this principled, dangerous deception and the character of the humble rebel who pulled it Janet Parnes of Historical Portrayals by Lady J, Millis will portray Deborah Sampson. The portrayal appeals to ages 7-adult. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Woburn Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
