The Orion Chamber Ensemble at Needham Bank Great Hall Concert Series

On Saturday, May 3, the Needham Bank Great Hall Concert Series will bring the Orion Chamber Ensemble to the Needham stage—including cellist Ronald Lowry, pianist Randall Hodgkinson, violinist Peter Zazofsky, guest artist and violinist Irina Muresanu, and guest artist and violist Noriko Futagami. The five are preparing a program that will delight long-time chamber music fans and those who want to explore this genre. It will be anchored by two favorite pieces—Beethoven’s invigorating Trio in D Major, Op. 70, No. 1 for Piano, Violin, and Cello, which is known for its mysterious “Ghost” movement, and Dvorak’s Quintet, Op. 81 in A Major for Strings and Piano, a “hit parade” of beautiful melodies infused with Czech folk rhythms. "We're delighted that these talented musicians are treating our audiences to an exceptional concert, and further supporting our mission by having the Needham High School Chorus and Chamber Strings join them for part of the program," said Michael Greis, co-president of The Great Hall Performance Foundation. Each member of this ensemble performs regularly with other acclaimed groups. Ronald Lowry is principal cellist of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and Boston Ballet Orchestra and artistic director of the Needham Concert Society. He performs frequently with the Boston Symphony. Randall Hodgkinson is an artist member of the Boston Chamber Music Society and a faculty member of the New England Conservatory, Wellesley College, and Longy School of Music of Bard College. As a young artist, he won the International American Music Competition and the Tanglewood Music Center’s Cabot Award. Peter Zazofsky has appeared as a soloist with many great orchestras around the world. As first violinist of the Muir String Quartet, he has performed many complete cycles of the Beethoven quartets and promoted new works by American composers. He is a faculty member at Boston University and also teaches at New England Conservatory Preparatory School. Romanian violinist Irina Muresanu is known for her elegant and passionate performances. As a faculty member at the University of Maryland, she is engaged in development of AI technology for violin instruction. She plays an 1849 Giuseppe Rocca violin with an Etienne Pajeot bow. Noriko Futagami is principal violist for Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and section violist with Rhode Island Philharmonic and Portland Symphony Orchestra, and a faculty member at Brown University. She also performs with the Radius Ensemble, Boston Musica Viva, Cantata Singers, and Winsor Music, among others.
