Join the editors of “What the Presidents Read: Childhood Stories and Family Favorites” for an engaging discussion on the early lives of various U.S. Presidents through the lens of their favorite childhood books. Editors Liz Goodenough and Marilynn Olson, alongside contributors Gil Leaf and Laura Wasowicz, will present, followed by a Q&A, book signing and light refreshments.
“What the Presidents Read: Childhood Stories and Family Favorites” (Rowman & Littlefield) offers a fascinating glimpse into the formative childhood books that shaped U.S. presidents throughout history, with contributions from prominent historians, academics, journalists and former Presidents.

Elizabeth Goodenough taught at Harvard, Claremont Mckenna College, and now University of Michigan. Her book, “Secret Spaces of Childhood,” was adapted for an award-winning PBS Documentary.
Marilynn S. Olson is a distinguished Professor Emerita of the English Department, Texas State University, and a former editor of the Children’s Literature Association Quarterly.
James G. Leaf, a senior partner at the Community Link Foundation, has led its educational initiatives for youth, drawing on his experience as the head of schools in Michigan and Massachusetts.
Laura Wasowicz is curator of Children’s Literature at the American Antiquarian Society. She has written on various aspects of nineteenth-century American children’s book publishing, picture book iconography and child reading habits.
