Join us for the Poetry Salon’s final session, focusing on Polish poet Wislawa Szymborska, the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1996. This will be the second appearance of Szymborska’s poems on the Salon’s calendar. Her poetry is deeply informed by Polish history from World War II through Stalinism. Szymborska, however, was also a deeply personal poet. "Of course, life crosses politics," Szymborska once said, "but my poems are strictly not political. They are more about people and life.” Her books have been translated into many languages and her range is international. We read Szymborska’s poetry for its noted wit, irony and deceptive simplicity. While her poetry examines domestic details and occasions, she plays these against the backdrop of history.
Claire Keyes, Professor Emerita at Salem State University, welcomes all poetry lovers to see how life crosses politics in this discussion of Szymborska’s poems. Registration is required to attend in person or via Zoom. Please register at tinyurl.com/Wislawa-Poetry. If registering for Zoom, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting online.
