The show surrounds five journalists who work at the fictitious “Columbus Post” who find themselves in a comedy of Biblical proportions. The show navigates themes of death and religion all while keeping the lighthearted, laugh-out-loud tone that the club is known for.
The play is made up of two acts: the first of which is mostly scripted and allows for some improvisation, and the second of which has no script at all and is left up to the five cast members to decide how the story ends every single night.
“I am so excited to do something as challenging as doing an entire act improvised,” said Grace Laurent, ImprovLSU president, “Working with these insanely talented improvisers I have been working with for years has been so rewarding. As someone who saw the original production, I am so excited to show people how we interpret this script and put our own unique spin on it!”
“God Gun!” was written by LSU alumnna Sophia Brazda in 2020 for her thesis piece with the help of other members of ImprovLSU. This second official running of the show is meant to honor the original run of the show, while also building upon the script and showcasing its versatility as an improvisational play.
“God Gun!” is directed by LSU senior and theater major Oreoluwa Onasanya. It stars Eric Rhode as Scott Butler, Cade Williams as Harry Partridge, Ryan Bailey as Marty Lincoln, Ricardo Mendoza as Michael Angelo, and Grace Laurent as Jean Deshotel.
“Directing a show is like giving birth to a child and watching them go abroad for college in like 5 weeks,” said director Oreoluwa Onsasanya, “they will be ready but you selfishly want them to stay your child. I think it’s going to be fun to be able to watch the child as a fellow adult in front of audiences, rather than as a parent.”
The play will run from November 14th through 16th starting at 7:30 p.m. and November 17th at 6:00 p.m. in the LSU College of Music and Dramatic Arts College Studio Theater. More information can be found at @improvLSU on Instagram.
