Ballet Austin invites audiences of all ages to step into an enchanting story book world of adventure, imagination, and heart with Stephen Mills’ The Magic Flute—a full-length ballet inspired by Mozart’s beloved opera.
This playful and visually captivating production runs Friday, May 8 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, May 10 at 3:00 p.m. at The Long Center for the Performing Arts in Austin, Texas—offering the perfect way to celebrate Mother’s Day weekend with the whole family.
Set on a fantastical journey filled with daring quests, unexpected friendships, and a touch of mischief, The Magic Flute follows Prince Tamino and his lovable bird-catching companion Papageno as they set out to rescue Princess Pamina. Along the way, nothing is quite what it seems. Guided by a magic flute and enchanted bells, their adventure becomes a story of courage, discovery, and the power of love to transform even the most uncertain path.
Blending Stephen Mills’ signature storytelling with imaginative, innovative design, the production brings this timeless tale to life through vibrant choreography, theatrical humor, and moments of pure magic. A standout visual element of the production is Mills’ decision to incorporate traditional Cambodian shadow puppetry—adding a rich, story book dimension that deepens the sense of wonder and invites audiences into a world where fantasy and folklore meet.
