Illuminate is the speaker series presented by The Lunar Foundation, spotlighting the artists and thought leaders shaping the creative industries. This event is hosted in partnership with KUT. Peter Yang has spent 30 years behind the camera at the top of American editorial photography. Now he's coming back to where it started.
A contributor to Rolling Stone, GQ, Esquire, and The New York Times Magazine, Yang has photographed some of the most recognized faces of our era, from Barack Obama to LeBron James, with campaign work for Levi's, Pepsi, and Ray-Ban. Born in Taiwan and raised in Dallas, he discovered photography during his years at UT Austin before building his career across New York and Los Angeles.
Moderating the conversation is Deborah Cannon, Visuals Editor for NPR affiliate KUT, KUTX, and The Texas Standard. A former staff photojournalist at the Austin American-Statesman for 18 years, Cannon covered presidential campaigns, two Tour de France victories, and major national news events, earning honors from the Online News Association, the Society of Newspaper Design, and the National Press Photographers Association. She and Peter know each other well, which makes for the kind of conversation you don't get at a panel.
The talk is followed by an audience Q&A and a post-talk mixer, so you can keep the conversation going with Peter and fellow guests.
Whether you shoot for a living, want to, or just love the craft, this is a rare chance to hear how one of America's top editorial photographers actually built his career. Admission is free and open to the public, so an RSVP is required.
