Introduction to Kumiko Woodworking Arts Class

Name: Introduction to Kumiko Instructor: Austin Waldo Skill Level: Beginner Prerequisites: We recommend taking the Sharpening class before this course Age: You must be at least 18 years old to participate Date: November 16th from 9am to 5pm Class Description: Kumiko is a traditional Japanese technique that creates beautiful decorative and delicate wooden patterns consisting of many wooden bars crossed and laid out to form various geometric designs and expressions. These panels are often found in Japanese doors, windows, room screens, small cabinets and boxes. Kumiko is typically done by hand and the panels are typically held together with tight fitting angles with no mechanical fasteners. At first glance, Kumiko panels certainly look to be extremely difficult. However, they are not. In this class, you’ll learn how to make a small framework panel with the classic asa-no-ha infill pattern. Students will learn how to create the joinery for the framework and then assemble the framework that holds the pattern. After that, you’ll learn how to cut the small pieces used to make the flower-like infill pattern. By the end of the day, each student will have a beautiful panel to take home. Materials and jig blocks are provided. Schedule: November 16th | 9am to 5pm What to bring: Some tools are available for purchase in the ASF retail store.
